1. Communication
· Call began with discussion of communication among committee members.
· Communication via email and the blog were discussed; no clear consensus on whether communication via reply all or via the blog was preferable, so compromise solution is to use both:
o Communication by email is good and helps to inform discussion;
o It was suggested that whenever appropriate, committee members reply to all on emails so that opinions and ideas are shared widely.
o Brine to resend invitations to the blog to the committee to encourage use of the blog.
o Brine to post email conversations on the blog (to use the blog as an archive of email conversations)
o It was suggest that requiring an invitation to use the blog was an obstacle, and it was suggested to perhaps open the blog; there was not consensus on this point and Brine will resend blog invitations.
2. Progress to goals and outreach
· Attendance goal and numbers were reviewed:
o Goal is 60 members of the class attending, and currently 86 Emeriti have said yes or maybe to attending Reunion.
· Additional outreach efforts were suggested:
o Emeriti-wide outreach:
§ It was suggested that outreach by organized by region;
§ Outreach by year was also suggested
§ Outreach by year was decided by committee

o Communication to the Class of 1960
§ Letter will be sent to invite Class of 1960 to their first AE celebration, invite them to the AE Committee
o It was suggest to organize the hope to attend list by class
§ Christopher to work on this
· Fundraising goals were reviewed:
o Goal is a gift from 2,350 donors (41% of 5,789), and currently 1,494 donors have made a gift (64% of goal)
3. Alumni Emeriti Reunion Celebration planning:
· Committee requested a place to meet before the dinner
o Phillips suggested meeting at tent it Quads, but this was not feasible because:
§ Last year tents were not set up on Quads or were only set up for a short period
§ Walk from the Quads, especially after walking to register at Alumni House may not be feasible for full group
o It was suggested that the committee meet in the Berwanger trophy room; this would be a convenient place to meet, but some concern that it would be crowded.
***Christopher to report back on tent arrangements (size, how long they will stay up, whether there will be a main hospitality tent), and on whether other groups will be using / walking through the Berwanger trophy room.***
· Dinner and Cocktail Party arrangements were briefly discussed:
o Location is at Ratner (same location as last year, with cocktails on the deck and dinner inside);
o Will be revisited once menu choices become available
· Dinner speaker
o The committee liked Dennis Hutchinson as a first choice as a dinner speaker.
***Christopher will report back next week with Dennis Hutchinson’s availability***
· UnCommon Core on the experience of overseas alumni
· Additional ideas for outreach and special events for Emeriti were discussed:
o Bus tour of campus; perhaps on both days
§ Christopher to find out and report back tour schedule
o Focus on the mid 1950’s in order to enlarge Emeriti community
o Chicago Alumni magazine will mention the idea in Class Notes
o Letter to members of the mid 50’s
o Emeriti would also like to learn about the continuing development / evolution of the University. This includes, but is not limited to:
§ Campus development and planning
§ Future growth of the University; who the shape and appearance of the University may change
§ Alliances that University has or is cultivating with other instutions.
o Update on developments at Schools and Divisions for dual degree holders
4. Publicity and encouraging attendance:
· Posting of Yearbook pix was not discussed extensively.
o The Alumni Weekend website cannot support pictures http://alumniandfriends.uchicago.edu/emeriti
o Yearbook pictures would need to be hosted on a different site, such as on facebook or on the blog
o Outreach to Alumni living abroad
5. Interest in building an ongoing Emeriti community
6. New items, additional comments from Committee.
· Christopher to send out hotel information
· Christopher to find copy of Linda Neal’s proposal for an Alumni Senate.
· Remaining Conference call meetings are scheduled for Wednesday at 10 a.m. CST on March 30, May 25 and July 27.
o Additional call was proposed; what are best dates?
